Desert rankings look simple on the surface. Count the area, compare the heat, list the rainfall, then pick the prettiest places. Yet deserts do not fit one fixed order. Change the measuring rule, and the order changes with it. Count all deserts, and Antarctica moves to the top. Count only hot deserts, and the Sahara takes first place. Judge heat by air temperature, and Death Valley leads. Judge it by land-surface temperature, and the Lut Desert becomes the leading example.

Desert rankings only become meaningful when the measurement, category, and evidence behind each position are stated clearly. Size, heat, dryness, color, dune height, biodiversity, and fame all produce different orders. Some of the most visually striking deserts are not the biggest. Some of the driest are not the hottest. Some deserts with little visible vegetation support diverse ecosystems.

A polar desert of ice, a subtropical desert of bare rock, a coastal fog desert, and a cold interior desert can all qualify as deserts for the same reason: very little precipitation. Their terrain may include ergs, gravel plains, yardangs, playas, salt flats, plateaus, volcanic fields, alluvial fans, and wind-cut basins.

What Counts as a Desert in the First Place

A desert is not defined by sand. It is defined by scarce precipitation. Many authorities use about 250 millimeters of annual precipitation as an approximate upper line for a true desert, although real boundaries are more complex. Some areas sit between desert and semidesert. Some deserts receive fog but little rain. Some receive snow instead of rain. Others receive a brief burst of water followed by years with almost none.

This definition resolves several common errors. Antarctica is a desert because it receives very little precipitation despite being cold and ice-covered. Not all deserts are hot; the Gobi, for example, has severe winters. Not all deserts are sandy either. Only a minority of desert surfaces are dune fields. Many deserts consist mainly of rock, gravel, salt crust, or compacted sediment.

The familiar image of uninterrupted dunes represents only part of the planet’s desert terrain. The Sahara contains famous ergs, but it also contains rocky plateaus and gravel plains. Why the Sahara Is Often Described as the Largest Desert

The Sahara is commonly called the world’s largest desert because it is the largest hot desert and closely matches the familiar image of heat, sand, rock, and open horizons. It extends across much of northern Africa and reaches summer temperatures above 50°C in some locations.

When the climatic definition includes polar regions, Antarctica ranks first. It covers about 14 million km² and receives very little precipitation across its interior. The Arctic desert zone occupies the second position.

Death Valley: The Benchmark for Official Air Heat

When the measurement is weather-station air temperature, Death Valley is the leading example. Badwater Basin lies 86 meters below sea level. Low elevation, enclosed basin topography, strong solar heating, dry air, and sparse cloud cover contribute to its extreme temperatures.

Death Valley is part of the wider Mojave Desert, which has dry, exposed terrain and very high summer temperatures across its lowest areas.

McMurdo Dry Valleys: Polar Aridity

The McMurdo Dry Valleys are ice-free valleys within Antarctica. Their dryness results from extreme cold, very low atmospheric moisture, and strong katabatic winds that remove snow and increase sublimation.
